Blasts target Somalia’s Lido beach restaurant

By ABDULKADIR KHALIF in Mogadishu | Friday, March 1  2013 at  16:39

(Africareview) A suicide bomber has struck a restaurant at Lido beach, north Mogadishu, reports say.

The restaurant is on the shores of the Indian Ocean.

Witnesses said a second blast emanated from a car packed with explosive materials.

The car was at the restaurant’s parking space.

No reports on casualty levels were readily available, but General Abdullahi Hassan Barise, the Commander of the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said that most of the casualties were the workers at the restaurant.

He promised a more thorough investigation.

The beach often hosts Somali security officers and peacekeepers serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).

Lido is the most popular beach around Mogadishu, often frequented on Thursdays and Fridays (weekends), especially by Diaspora Somalis.
