Toronto – Two government officials are reportedly killed in an Ambush in Northern Ethiopia after armed groups operating in the area opened fire. They officials were killed as they were heading back to Lalibela, the seat of Lasta District, North Wollo zone of the Amhara region – a source close to the district administration has confirmed.
A BBC Amharic report that was published on Wednesday said Getachew Melse, Lasta District Head and Million Afework, Head of the district’s Health office were killed. The source confirmed the news from residents in the area.
The incident happened on Tuesday near a location close to Kulmeskf- which is in the vicinity of Lalibela town – home of the 12th-century rock-hewn churches. The officials were in Wolida, the seat of North Wollo Administration, where they were attending a meeting.
It is said that there were other members of the Lasta district administration on board. One other individual, whose name is undisclosed, was killed and two others were wounded.
Families of the officials who were killed are informed about and residents told BBC Amharic that they have seen people grieving at the district administrator’s residence in Lalibela.
Other government officials who were traveling to Lalibela had to turn back and reportedly spent the night in Kulmesk.
BBC Amharic also cited sources from the area that Getachew Melse will be laid to rest at Genete Mariam – his place of birth. Million Afework will be laid to rest in Lalibela but the bodies were not taken to Lalibela at the time of the writing.
There is no clear information as to who is behind the killing. BBC Amharic sources who work in the district administration indicated that Getachew Melse used to receive death threats and that a member of his family was kidnapped at one point.
From other Ethiopian News Sources, Fano forces operating in Wollo on Tuesday released an advisory saying that the Ethiopian government is engaged in criminal activity in the name of Fano. East Amhara Fano uniforms are reportedly used for criminal activities by groups that the government deployed, Wollo Fano alleges.
There has been news of intense fighting over the past three days in North Wollo – among other parts of the area – between government forces and Fano forces.

Both are Amharas, killed by Amharas. You don’t need Tplf to kill Amharas; they will do it themselves. It is a lot cheaper. You see what ethnic politics does to you? Fan-Nos are all Amharas; the land they brag they have controlled is already in the hands of the Amhara. The banks they loot, the bridges they blow up, etcetera are all their own. How unfortunate!
This killing is a qualified terrorism.
