Ethiopian Electric Power has reportedly made changes to the price of electric power to be exported to neighboring Kenya.

Agreement reached between the two countries some ten years ago was for one kilowatt of power to be sold at US$0.10 cents.

However, Kenya has been asking for improvement as the service delivery got delayed from the Ethiopian side, according to a report published by the Ethiopian Reporter.

From the report, Kenya has been negotiating price adjustments for a long time and the two countries have reached an agreement on that too.

Asheber Balcha, executive of Ethiopian Electric Power, is cited as saying that the agreement was reached about three weeks ago.

Kenya will be buying one kilowatt of power per hour at a rate of US$ 0.65 cents. And it will take effect starting October 2022.  The price is said to have only one Ethiopian birr ($0.020)  difference compared to the price for domestic use in the country.

Kenya was negotiating to get it for $0.5 cents per kilowatt.

Ethiopia is reportedly having conversations with Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi with the aim to start exploring electric power.

Last month Ethiopia announced that it generated $95 million from the export of Electric Power to Kenya and Djibouti.  The revenue was said to be  5.4 percent (by 4.9 $million) higher compared to one that was generated in the previous year.

When the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is completed ( and the Ethiopian government hopes that to happen in about two and half years time),  there will be more that 6000 MW of electric power in the country.
