Lalibela is Ethiopia’s answer to Jerusalem. In fact, it is often referred to as “The New Jerusalem” and it even has its’ own “Golgotha.” The legendary town is known for its’ incredible rock hewn churches. It is a place of elaborately dressed deacons and priests and a center for thousands of pilgrims who come during special occasions to recharge their “spiritual batteries.” Lalibela was one of the main reasons that I wanted to come to Ethiopia so badly. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.
I won’t go into lengthy descriptions of the place, rather I’ll get right to the selection of photos I’ve come up with and will try to tell the story through them. What I will say is that the ride into Lalibela was spectacular and as the sealed road ended, the feeling of going back in time quickly started to take over. It surprises me that places like Lalibela and its’ surroundings still exist parallel to the world that most of us in the “West” live in. It goes without saying that I am more than thankful this is still the case. Read more…
