Raya Identity Politics : Revealing interview – “We had an information that TPLF was preparing for military action, Federal gov’t was informed about it”

Toronto – In an interview with Andafta media, Hailu Abera, who is the chairperson of Raya Alamata Identity Restoration Committee and also mayor of Raya Bala, raised numerous points about the controversy regarding Raya within the context of history and politics.

A year after toppling colonel Mengistu Hailemariam’s government and taking power in Addis Ababa, the TPLF incorporated Raya as part of Tigray in 1992. For about 27 years after that the TPLF forcefully imposed an ethnic Tigray Identity on Raya. Hailu Elaborated the process in a way addressing claims of “historical ground” to incorporate Raya as part of Tigray.

It has been reported in major Ethiopian media outlets, including borkena, that the TPLF launched a full-fledged military invasion of many areas in the Raya area displacing more than 50,000 residents in the process.

Hailu Abera says “we had the information in October last year that the TPLF was preparing for a violent take over of Raya and the Federal government was informed about it.” Tadesse Worede, Deputy President of Interim Administration of Tigray, has been openly claiming that the military control of Raya was an offshoot of arrangement with the Federal government. The Federal government did not deny or confirm about it.

The TPLF’s move is clearly in violation of the Pretoria Agreement and referendum idea which Abiy Ahmed’s Administration has been talking about appear to be ignored at this point. Recent reports indicated the TPLF forces are camping in schools in the Alamata area.
