Ethiopian Athlete Yalemzerf Yehualaw on Sunday won the London Marathon. It took her 2:17:26 hours to finish the distance, and it is her personal best time too.
Another astonishing thing about her win, based on a report from World Athletics, it is only her second Marathon in her career.
There is more to it. “Yalemzerf Yehualaw overcame a heavy fall to win the women’s race at the TCS London Marathon,” the source reported.
She tripped when she was about 10 kilometers away from the finishing line and was left behind by the leading pack. She was able to rejoin the leading back after a minute and eventually broke away from the group to claim victory.
“I am so happy to win here in London…I have worked very hard to prepare for this race and to take the victory is amazing,” Yalemzerf Yehuala said, as quoted by World Athletics.
Kenyan Athlete, Joyciline Jepkosgei, finished second in 2:18:07 hours. Joyciline was the champion of London Marathon last year. And Alemu Megertu, another Ethiopian Athlete, finished third in 2:18:32 hours.
In the men’s category, Amos Kipruto from Kenya won the race in 2:04:39 hours. Ethiopian Athlete, Leul Gebresilase finished second securing a spot on the podium. It took him 2:05:12 hours to finish the distance.

Our gallant daughter Yalemzerf bint Yehualaw made my day this morning. It wasn’t even close. She just annihilated the entire field. I was like ‘Get’em tiger! Go get’em! Get’em tiger!!’ I lost my voice as a result! I was pacing myself as if I was there with her when suddenly my legs found out they are running on a high mileage engine. Then I found a refuge in my sofa. She blew away the field by almost 45 seconds and at one point she was running the mile at unheard of 4 minutes and 30 seconds pace. Way to go Yalemzerf! Kudos 5-Star General Derartu bint Tulu!!! I’m good now! I’m good for a month!!!
