Tirunesh Dibaba won Bank of America Chicago Marathon. She finished the distance in 2:18:31 , just shy of a little over a minute from the course record ( 2:17:18 ) which was set by Paula Radcliffe in 2002.

According to Chicago Tribune, Tirunesh aimed at breaking the course record. Tirunesh is quoted as saying,through interpreter, “I actually wasn’t running against anyone…I was running to improve my personal best.”

Tirunesh Dibaba is a two time Olympic gold winner and world record holder in 5000 meters. This year, she finished second in 10,000 meters at the world championship in London after Almaz Ayana.

Brigid Kosgei of Kenya finished second in 2:20:22 minutes while Jordan Hasay, American athlete, finished third in 2:20:57.

A record number of 44,000 people participated in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
