The ancient city of Aleppo was once the second largest city of Syria. Nearly after five years of occupation by radical Islamic militants, the city is now mostly under government control.
But it is not the same Aleppo. It is basically reduced to nothing due to the scale of destruction. The ancient structures and historical sites are annihilated.
The viral video footage above was taken by a drone after radical Islamist forces their battle to maintain control in Aleppo. It shows eastern part of Aleppo.
As in other battles against radical forces elsewhere in Syria, Russians provided crucial military support by way of airstrike for the success of Syrian army in Aleppo.
There was an international outcry on the issue of Syria on alleged grounds that civilians are deliberately targeted.
The Economist wrote “Russian aircraft have targeted its hospitals and schools; its citizens have been shelled, bombed, starved and gassed …”
Aleppo certainly represents one of the tragedies of our time. However, the image painted about it by different media outlets need not be taken at face value.
Syrians in Aleppo gathered to celebrate Christmas for the first time in at least four years. Seemingly, they were shelled by radical Islamist forces although no life was lost.
