Toronto – Somaliland government recently reported that Ethiopia is upgrading its consular office in Hargeisa to Embassy level.

It was Somaliland’s Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance – Ali Hassen Mohammed- who spoke about it citing President Muse Bihi Abdi who reportedly spoke about it during the 33rd Independence Anniversary of Somalia’s break away region.

Ethiopia, however, did not remark about it.

Nebyu Tedla, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, was on Thursday asked about it during a press briefing in Addis Ababa. He said “he can not speak about it,” as cited by DW Amharic report.

It is to be recalled that Somalia’s Federal government last month ordered the closures of Ethiopian consulates in Hargeisa and Garowe. While Somaliland and Puntland rejected Somalia’s Federal government instruction, Ethiopia did not remark about it.

  1. Good diplomatic move and sensible approach.. Ethiopia shouldn’t entangle itself with an illegality of international conduct, petty clannish warlord issues and other diplomatically a
counter-productive matters of internal affairs of Somalia. The best and sensible policy approach of Ethiopia should be to commit on one Somalia policy without exception. Ethiopia should focus on holistic diplomacy and narratives of regional bloc integration in terms of socio- economic, open borders and trade issues as Ethiopian political analyst and pundit Jawar Mohamed recently opined in his recent interview. I completely agree with him this time,

  2. HOA except Djibouti is becoming weirder and weirder by the minute. It keeps you asking what they gonna do next or what is gonna go down tomorrow? One is signing an MOU to the shock of many and the other one is busy auctioning his country to the highest bidder at no charge. One is being berated by dozens of screaming clans and the other is being denied his beauty sleep by bigots and rogue elements in the two largest regions. What is next? Your guess is as good as mine.
