Toronto – The Ethiopian Airlines on Saturday inaugurated a newly transformed terminal for all domestic flights. It’s just a $50 million dollar investment but the impact seems to be big. According to a news update from the airline, the expanded facility is said to have doubled the terminal’s handling capacity.

The CEO, Mesfin Tassew, sees the project as an “addition to its modernizing initiative.” The facility serves as a hub to twenty-two domestic destinations and all of them have at least a daily flight.  There are as many as 200 daily flights to domestic destinations, the airlines revealed.

The new facility has four contact gates, self-check-in kiosks, 22 check-in counters, security and screening features, 10 remote departure gates, passengers lounge and other amenities. The airline said that “these enhancements will streamline passenger flow, improve comfort levels, and enhance the overall travel experience.”

The CEO said “…as the demand in domestic travel is growing, the completion of this project would allow us to offer a smooth travel experience to our esteemed passengers.”

DW Amharic, on Saturday, reported that Ethiopian Airlines experienced a surge in the number of domestic passengers in recent years. It has transported as many as 3.5 million passengers across the 22 domestic destinations.  Recently, Ethiopian Airlines resumed flights to Dembi Dollo, Wollega. The fight was suspended for a long time – apparently due to the security situation. Likewise, service to Aksum – in the Tigray region –  is resumed and flights are daily.

Ethiopia Airlines has also inaugurated terminals in Gode and Jinka towns.

While there is a  view that attributes the rise in the number of passengers with the security situation in the country – which has evidently complicated road transportation to and from the capital Addis Ababa, the airline does not seem to buy that.  It links the change to an “increase in the number of middle income earning sections of the population.”

The Airlines has been undertaking multiples of exposition projects including for its international flights. “The inauguration of Domestic Terminal is the latest in a series of strategic investments by Ethiopian Airlines to enhance its infrastructure and services in the country,” it said in its update.

Dear Readers: Please note that I have NEVER been the employee of Ethiopian Airlines. But, I have always been an ADMIRER of ETHIOPIA AIRLINES. FULL STOP.

  2. This is blatantly misleading. No doubt, the surge of domestic flight demand has something to do with the worsening security situation in the country that made perilous, if impossible, traveling from point A to point B on the roads in every region and corner of the country. Few people would pay or even can afford paying a hefty price of 50 dollar per domestic flight when the monthly average wage is around 100 dollar. The statement of the Airline is ridiculous and insulting people’s intelligence if not politically motivated gymnastics induced by the regime.
