Toronto – The government of Canada on Monday announced a $14 million donation to Ethiopia. The fund will support disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of ex-combatants in Ethiopia.
Ahmed Hussein, Minister of International Development, who announced financial support during his visit to Ethiopia. He visited the Tigray region of Ethiopia, where he met with Getachew Reda, president of Interim Regional Administration.
In a social media post, the Embassy of Canada in Addis Ababa quoted him as saying, “Canada continues to advocate for full implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA). Ethiopia has our full support for post-conflict recovery and development, as well as ongoing humanitarian assistance. Together we can foster peace and security for a brighter future in Ethiopia.”
Getachew Reda has confirmed that he held discussions with Canada’s Minister for International Development. The focus of the discussion was, according to Getachew, “on what needs to be done to ensure the full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement. “
On Monday, the Minister met with Taye Atske-Selassie, Ethiopia’s Minister For Foreign Affairs. They discussed the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and DDR process, the Ministry announced.
“Ethiopia values its longstanding and vibrant relationship with Canada,” said Taye Atske-Selassie
The devastating war between Abiy Ahmed’s Federal government and the TPLF-led Tigray regional government is believed to have claimed over one million lives. It came to an end when the Pretoria agreement was signed in November 2022.
