Toronto – The Ethiopian government on Saturday released a statement condemning the terrorist attack in Moscow, Russia. At least 133 people were killed and 150 others wounded due to the attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue – in the outskirts of Russia’s capital on Friday.
“Ethiopia condemns the barbaric and heinous terrorist attack against innocent civilians at the Crocus Concert Hall, Moscow, the Russian Federation,” reads the press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MAFE).
The statement seems to see the incident in Moscow as a general terrorist attack. The Ministry said “Terrorism is a great danger to mankind and requires the concerted effort of countries around the world to prevent such loss of life.”
The brief press release expressed condolence to the people and government of Russia. It stated that “Ethiopia stands in solidarity with the government and People of the Russian Federation in this difficult time and it can count on Ethiopia’s full support in the fight against terrorism.” The diplomatic relation between Russia and Ethiopia was established as early as 1898 and the two countries currently have a range of cooperation agreements.
A total of 11 suspects – including 4 perpetrators – are arrested so far in connection with the attack, according to a report by RT. They were caught reportedly while attempting to cross to Ukraine against whom Russia has been fighting. One of the primary suspects is said to have Russian citizenship. Seven other individuals allegedly involved in the attack are yet to be detained.
Russia’s president, Vladmir Putin, has addressed the nation after the tragic incident that has claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians. Calling the attack “bloody and barbaric,” he reportedly said “The main thing now is to prevent those who are behind this bloodbath from committing a new crime,” to prevent another attack. New measures have been introduced in addition to the existing ones. Mr. Putin vowed that all those involved in the attack. RT quoted him as saying :
“All perpetrators, organizers and masterminds behind this crime will get just and inevitable punishment. Whoever they are, whoever guides them. I repeat, we will identify and punish everyone who stands behind the terrorists, who prepared this atrocity, this attack on Russia, on our people”
The concert venue with a capacity of over 6000 people was nearly full when attackers opened fire before the concert was about to begin. Some major media outlets in the west linked the attack to ISIS.
