Toronto – Switzerland is building a new embassy in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.  Ignazio Cassis, visiting Swiss Foreign Minister, and Taye Aske Selassie, Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, on Tuesday laid a cornerstone for the construction, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MFAE) reported.

“The decision to construct a new building signals Switzerland’s determination to further strengthen its longstanding relationship with Ethiopia,” MFAE cited Taye as saying.  The Minister also thinks that it demonstrates Addis Ababa “being a diplomatic hub.”

For the Swiss Foreign Minister, his country’s move to build a new embassy is ” a historic event aimed at strengthening the existing friendship of the two countries.”

Cooperation between Switzerland and Ethiopia

A day before the ceremony to lay the cornerstone for the new embassy building, Ethiopia and Switzerland had a bilateral meeting at Sheraton Addis during which “regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest” were discussed.

According to the MFAE, the two countries have agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation with a particular focus to “promote peace and stability.”

“The discussion was fruitful in many aspects and the relation between Ethiopia and Switzerland is informed by the outstanding and historical ties they enjoy,” said  Ignazio Cassis, as cited by the MFAE.

The relationship between Switzerland and Ethiopia goes back to the 19th century as a Swiss Engineer Alfred Ilg was involved in the construction of the Ethio-Djibouti railway line.

The two countries signed a friendship and trade treaty in 1933. The relationship developed further after the Second World War, according to information from the Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs. There have been regular political consultations between the two countries after the signing of the Memorandum of understanding in 2014.

  1. Okay Ethiopia hating bigots!!! This in your face!!! AU and other UN related headquarters are staying in Addis/Finfine!! You have been working tirelessly urging, pleading begging all these to move their permanent offices to your benefactors’ cities close to the Mediterranean. The great citizens of Switzerland are telling you to bug off!!! They ain’t going anywhere. In fact they are building a new spanking embassy to last another 100 years. What language you don’t understand? Go to your stinking crib in Minnesota, Toronto, Oslo and Down Under and cry rivers!!! I’m sorry, I forgot Michigan and LA.
