Reuters conducted a comprehensive investigation revealing disturbing actions by a covert security apparatus aimed at quashing dissent in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. The focus was on the “Koree Nageenyaa” or “Security Committee,” established after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018 to address unrest and protests.
Led by Shimelis Abdisa, the Committee reportedly orchestrated a brutal crackdown, including extrajudicial killings and mass detentions targeting government protesters and suspected Oromo Liberation Army sympathizers.
The investigation uncovered instances of violence, such as the massacre of elders and the killing of Gadaa leaders, with evidence suggesting the Committee’s involvement. The report also detailed interference in the justice system, torture of detainees, and reprisals against judges and lawyers. Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission confirmed the Committee’s existence and documented human rights abuses linked to it. Despite requests for comment, the Oromia regional government has not responded to the allegations.
