Ethiopian Airlines launches new direct route to Cape Town

Cape Town – Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline in Africa, has announced that it has finalized preparations to start flights from Addis Ababa to Cape Town as of 30 June 2015.

With this new route, the airline will also launch a direct flight to Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, Ethiopian Airlines said in a statement.

The new services will offer passengers more choice and flexibility, as well as facilitate trade, investment, and tourism ties between Ethiopia and these two countries.

The airline will operate six scheduled flights to Cape Town. Fights will depart Addis Ababa on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 09:30, and arrive in Cape Town at 17:30. Returning flights will depart from Addis Ababa every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 23:30 and arrive in Cape Town at 07:50 in the next morning.

Ethiopian Group CEO, Tewolde Gebremariam, said in the statement that “as a Pan-African airline working to bring Africa together and closer to the world”, the airline is excited to spread their wings to Cape Town and Gaborone.

“Our new flights to Cape Town and Gaborone will give our customers more and convenient connectivity options when traveling within, to and from the continent. We will continue to expand our reach in our home market in Africa with a view to support to the continent’s socio-economic integration and development”, he said.

Ethiopian Airlines is the fastest growing and most profitable airline in Africa. In 2014, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) ranked Ethiopian as the largest airline in Africa in revenue and profit.

In its operations in the past close to seven decades, Ethiopian has been a pioneer of African aviation as an aircraft technology leader providing the first jet service in the continent in 1962.

Ethiopian Airlines commands the lion share of the pan-African passenger and cargo network operating the youngest and most modern fleet to more than 83 international destinations across five continents.
