Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers Approves Law Reaccepting Former Terrorist Political Groups

Council of Ministers _ Ethiopia

Toronto – The council of ministers on Friday discussed and approved legislation to accept political parties that had been operating “outside of peaceful and legal political activity.”

It was discussed within the context of “Ethiopian election, political parties registration and election code of conduct” legislation. That piece of legislation was missing something, the Council of Ministers argued.

“Whenever political parties, who remained outside of the framework of legal and peaceful political activity, demonstrate interest in peaceful and legal political activity  there was no provision in the existing legislation to accept these entities as legal political parties,” reads the statement from the office of Prime Minister which was written in Amharic.

The office of the Prime Minister said the  Council of Ministers “unanimously approved” and referred the piece of legislation to the House of People’s Representatives (Ethiopian Parliament) for approval. There has been no precedent  in the past six or so years whereby the parliament declined to approve proposals from the council of ministers. Well over 95 percent of the parliamentarians are from the ruling Prosperity Party.

TPLF will be accepted as a legal party again

The first reaction to the proposed legislation came from the Tigray region.

Getachew Reda, Former TPLF spokesperson and current President of the Interim Regional government of Tigray, remarked “The Resolution of the Council of Ministers in one step is the right direction in consolidating peace”

There have been instances where the TPLF violated the terms of the Pretoria Agreement.  In March 2024, it invaded several areas in the Raya Alamata area of Ethiopia – in violation of the agreement. Over 36,000 residents were displaced, as reported by OCHA.

Not just that. Although the core of the Pretoria agreement was for the TPLF to disarm its combatants, by March 2024 ( nearly two years after the agreement) the organization announced that it still had 270,000 armed combatants.  The Council of Ministers seems to think that the TPLF has demonstrated interest in “legal and peaceful” political activity.

The TPLF and the ruling Prosperity Party had a three rounds of political dialogue in Mekelle over the past two months. However, the omens of political and military alliance between them were observed right after the Pretoria Agreement in 2022.

The Ethiopian Parliament designated the TPLF as a terrorist organization in May 2021 after the latter attacked the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force  and took control of Afar and Amhara regions militarily.

  1. Excellent news. Whether we want to accept it or not, overwhelmingly, our upright and noble people of Tigray are behind the TPLF. The have huddled in the front for all their needs since the 1970’s. Has the front taken the people of that region to the promised land of life, liberty and happiness? The answer to that is obvious and the reality on the ground is the ultimate attestation to that. But those noble people no other organization strong enough to provide them the alternative. But now the front is being brought back to the fold and let’s hope that its leaders will use their brain rather than being pompous about their muscle. Stubbornness only brought death and destruction to the region. That has handed them utter destruction that will take tens of billions in US dollars and decades to rebuild all back and that will happen only if their is peace and stability in the region and the entire country. Every time I see pictures the destruction and read the latest estimate of the loss of human lives, it just boils my blood. It angers me knowing that all could have been avoided. But our Tigrayan brothers and sisters have come home with the rest of the people of the old country. Congratulation and God Speed!!!

  2. America ordered Abiy to bring Tplf into the fold or else. Abiy first pushed out NEB Commissioner Birtukan Mideksa for “health reasons” because she would not approve Tplf application on the grounds that it did not meet set qualifications for party registration. Abiy then ordered his handpicked cabinet ministers to do the same. Parliamentarians have no say at all. There we go. We are back to where we started six years ago. PP will effectively be Eprdf 2.0! Except for the few dead, all Tplf members have been released and all their property and stolen money returned. And above all, Tplf is armed to the teeth. Abiy may be digging his own grave! I think Fano should stop being belligerent and join the party. Otherwise, it will remain in political wilderness for the foreseeable future.

  3. The TPLF is betraying the citizens of Tigray because Tigrayans as the civilized and developed people do not demand any political solution short of formal independence. The most important and relevant issues for Tigray now after the devastating wars, are organizing a democratic referendum and restoration of its nationhood. The TPLF politics of marching into Addis Ababa in 1991 and removing the colonial Amhara rule should have ended in the 1990s. Its liberation of Eritrea was the right and fair step it has taken too. The gallant Tigray forces reversed the red star military campaign in Eritrea and defeated the the Amhara colonial army in 1982. It was a historical victory for the Tigray forces.

    • Your dream was realized because the Amhara people was tired of Derg. Now Amhara is back to lead so neither TPLF or OLF can stop it. Amhara is always the king maker in Ethiopia.

  4. Power thirsty Abiy Ahmed isn’t educated enough to understand how he is despise and lost every Ethiopians support. He still thinks he is able to divid and conquer, cheat, deceits and convince. EPRDF was given second chance and has proven to be the enemy of Ethiopians. EPRDF and Prosperity Party have failed and exposed. Only Transitional and newly elected leaders must administer.

  6. It shows a system and government operating under the usual run-of-the-mill of authoritarian leader and his ignominious ubber stamp parliament. If you thought woyane and their oppressive and currupt political instrument of the EPRF version 1:0 were bad enough, bear with the sequels of the lunatic and sleazy Abiy, his incompetent Oromumma agents and other surrogates of the EPRDF of version 2:0 make their a full circle. God helps the poor masses.
